Opinion: Anti-virus software developers have a conflict of interest in the sustained development and implementation of viruses. Some developers profit by instilling unreasonable fear in computer users in order to boost sales. Some have been known to create a virus and release it, in order to increase sales of their software solution afterward. Despite the honesty of some anti-virus software developers, the present situation creates an unfair vulnerability of the consumer which has the sense of being readily exploited. The solution is relatively simple. Operating systems need to provide their own defense against viruses. Most new operating systems do have their own integrated anti-virus software, and this software is kept current through automatic updates by the operating system. Through partnerships, collaborations, or even mergers of leading operating system developers and anti-virus software developers, these integrated systems can be enhanced. Operating systems will be able to market such new developments as enhanced stability and reliability.
